A Permanent Resident is required to live in Canada for the long term and to move ahead for citizenship. A PR Card will allow you to remain in Canada for up to three years without applying for VISAs. You can also apply for citizenship within 3-5 years. Permanent Residents can live and work in Canada. Canada, as a country, will ensure that PR holders are safe and secure. It is part of your national identity and allows you to travel freely outside Canada.
The first PR card will give you access to all rights and privileges of Permanent Residency status for up to 5 years. Any Permanent Resident will need to renew their card and update their status every five years. To ensure your card status is maintained, you must update it before its expiration date.
You can apply for your PR Card in the following situations before it expires after 5 years:
If your card is stolen or lost.
If your status is not renewed within nine months.
To update your address and name.
If the card has not been sent within 180 days of your entry to Canada.
Complete approval of the application for Permanent Residence. (You will need a sponsor to complete the initial application for permanent residency in Canada.)
Submitting the renewal application to the Canadian Government.
Show that you have not misused your Permanent Resident status.
You must be present in Canada for at least 730 days during the five years.
